The Possibilities of 5G

Our challenge

  • Editorial Branded Content
  • Video
  • Animation

In 2020, Samsung launched a new line of 5G enabled phones, and its centerpiece was the Samsung Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G. To coincide with the launch, Samsung wanted to focus on two key pillars for a branded video series: gaming and photojournalism. And so we partnered with Vox Studios to create three videos - two shorter pieces geared toward gamers, and one longer piece aimed at photojournalists.

Our approach

For the two gaming videos, we worked closely with Microsoft Xbox Game Pass to learn about the revolution in gaming. One video delved into advances in multiplayer gaming, while the other one focused on remote cloud gaming. We incorporated actual game content into the pieces, and viewers had the option of choosing Video A or B to learn more about a specific aspect of 5G gaming. This choose-your-own-topic style of advertising worked seamlessly with the kind of content we were highlighting, while it also held heightened interest and attention with the viewer. With host and gaming influencer Naomi Kyle serving as a narrator and guide, the pieces speak to the exciting innovations of 5G gaming - appealing to hardcore players and novices alike. Kyle’s scenes were shot in her home against a greenscreen, with a barebones crew. The final pieces lived on Vox Creative and Hulu. For the photojournalism pillar, we used Vox’s signature explainer style to dig into the Galaxy Note20 Ultra 5G’s camera and its game-changing potential for photographers around the world. In this video, we featured two working photojournalists from our vast network - Katie Orlinsky and Harrison Hill - who spoke to the unique challenges of capturing premium content in farflung, remote, and tentative locations. To really demonstrate how powerful these cameras are, we shot their interviews on the phones themselves. We wove their insights with archival material from the photographers, as well as new, original material (both photo and video) that we commissioned for the piece. We tied these elements up with original motion graphics and a voiceover, resulting in a clear and dynamic look at 5G photography ‘in action.’
